His attempt to claim the throne of England fails and his followers are scattered and many are killed. Robert Tremaine enlisted his children to the cause, Robin believes that Charles "had the right." Robin Lacey consequently is a known Jacobite and his life would be forfeit.

Father: Sir Robert Walpole

Horace Walpole was elected a member of Parliament in 1741 while he was on his Grand Tour. He purchased a home in 1748, after his father's (Sir Robert Walpole) death, called Strawberry Hill and "gothicized" it with battlements and turrets and brought about the Gothic architectural revival. He spent much of his later life expanding the house and grounds to make it a "little Gothick castle". He set up his own press. Horace was a well known letter writer and essayist. In 1791 he became the Earl of Orford. His novels, The Castle of Otranto and The Italian Monk, created a fashion for Gothic romance. His chief literary reputation lies in his letters which deal with politics, foreign affairs and gossip. His letters are 18th Century England’s truest record, portraying social life, public affairs, and contemporary arts with wit and accuracy. One of the earlier Earls of St. Erth who was a fervid adherent to Mr. Walpole, returned to the "Gothick" style when remodelling Stanyon Castle.

Attends Lady Lowestoft's rout and "since he lived so close, was naturally a latecome." Peter Merriot meets him at White's and they exchange a few words...he announces his intention of retiring to Strawberry Hill and retires behind the "Spectator" at sight of Mr Markham.

A tall young woman,

26 years old, with brown hair and grey eyes. She plays the part of a man (Peter Merriot) during a stay in London, and in spite of her precarious situation has a very cool head and earns the admiration of Sir Anthony Fanshawe. Before her arrival in London with her brother she lived a transitory life on the continent, sometimes as a boy and sometimes as a girl.

A slight elderly gentleman with arresting grey eyes, a nose inclined to be acquiline, and thin, smiling lips. As a youth he was a rebellious younger son who eloped with Maria, the daughter of a farmer, and ran away to the continent. During his exile he had a number of aliases including Mr Colney in the late rebellion of Charles Stuart (see list above). He is extremely egotistical and experienced in intrigue. His children believe in his ability to make plans and carry them out, although they don't understand them, and refer to him as The Old Gentleman, also a nickname for the devil. He has kept gaming houses in Frankfort and Munich, he has been a fencing master in France, a German Baron in Rome, a French Ambassador in Madrid, a Polish Prince, he has meddled in a pie of M. de Saxe's making and he has stole[n] the Margrave's mistress!

A slight young man with fair hair and blue eyes, who bears a strong resemblence to his father.Earlier he had taken part in the rebellion of Charles Stuart along with his father (going by the name of Robin Lacey). He is in hiding after the rebellion is put down and accompanies his sister to London. He is disguised as a woman (Kate Merriot) through most of the book, and is able to carry off the role due to his acting skill, sense of adventure, and small stature. He is an excellent swordsman and becomes smitten with Letty Grayson.

The late aunt of Lord Barham, she is remembered by him as owning a spaniel named Toto. He identifies a sample of her handwriting as part of the proof of his identity.

A French lady with black eyes and a thin, vivid face. The widow of Sir Roger and a friend of the Tremaines from their days in France. She owns a house in Arlington St, London and in Richmond. In London and she introduces the Merriots to London society.

A sober and wealthy gentleman who was an English ambassador. He dieda little more than a year back. His wife had been heard to say that his English respectability gave her cramp in the soul.

His face was handsome in the swarthy style. He is a suitor of Letitia Grayson, a toady of Mr Rensley and challenges Peter Merriot to a duel. Considered to be a gambler and a person of bad ton. A member of White's, he lives at Number 5, Poynter Street.

Lady Lowestoft's maid, described as being very fat, a colossus of a woman. She is French and became acquainted with the Tremaines in France.

He picks a quarrel with Peter Merriot and challenges him to a duel.

While he is believed by his family to have gone to America, he had actually been on the continent travelling with Robert Tremaine all those years; John says, We Burtons have always served Tremaine.

He is the only one to discover the Merriots' identities, and falls in love with Prudence Tremaine for her courage and intelligence.
