Horace Walpole was elected a member of Parliament in 1741 while he was on his Grand Tour. He purchased a home in 1748, after his father's (Sir Robert Walpole) death, called Strawberry Hill and "gothicized" it with battlements and turrets and brought about the Gothic architectural revival. He spent much of his later life expanding the house and grounds to make it a "little Gothick castle". He set up his own press. Horace was a well known letter writer and essayist. In 1791 he became the Earl of Orford. His novels, The Castle of Otranto and The Italian Monk, created a fashion for Gothic romance. His chief literary reputation lies in his letters which deal with politics, foreign affairs and gossip. His letters are 18th Century England’s truest record, portraying social life, public affairs, and contemporary arts with wit and accuracy. One of the earlier Earls of St. Erth who was a fervid adherent to Mr. Walpole, returned to the "Gothick" style when remodelling Stanyon Castle. Attends Lady Lowestoft's rout and "since he lived so close, was naturally a latecome." Peter Merriot meets him at White's and they exchange a few words...he announces his intention of retiring to Strawberry Hill and retires behind the "Spectator" at sight of Mr Markham. |
