When the Duke decides it is time that he wed, he presents his mother with the names of five suitable women and asks her to choose one of them as his bride. His mother, distressed at this cold method, instead encourages him to make the acquaintance of his godmother's granddaughter, Miss Phoebe Marlow. The Duke is intrigued, and pays a visit to his godmother, the Dowager Lady Ingham, but when the Dowager is indiscreet in her eagerness to make a match between her granddaughter and her godson, the Duke is put upon his guard. He is further dismayed when his attempt to make himself known to Miss Marlow results in her fleeing into the night.

When the Duke asks for her assistance in choosing a bride, the Duchess is quick to recommend that he make the acquaintance of Miss Phoebe Marlow, who is not only the daughter of her dear deceased friend, but also the granddaughter of the Duke's godmother.
