Succeeded his father in 1758 as the 5th earl. Married to Margaret, youngest daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower in 1770. In 1778, North appointed him to head the peace commission to America, which was a failure. Lord Carlisle held several other royal posts, including Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Lord Steward of the Household.

Young Carlisle is sponsoring Frederick Comyn.

Cholmondley succeeded his grandfather, the 3rd Earl, in 1770. In 1815 created Marquess of Cholmondley. Married in 1791 to Georgiana Bertie, 2nd daughter of the 4th Duke of Ancaster. He held various posts at court and in the government.

British statesman and foreign secretary (1782, 1783, 1806), born in London, England, UK. He studied at Oxford, became a Liberal MP at 19, and two years later was a junior lord of the Admiralty. He supported Lord North, but in 1772 resigned over American policy. He became secretary of state after North's downfall, and in 1783 formed a coalition with him, which held office for a short period in 1783. He supported the French Revolution, and strongly opposed the war with France. After Pitt's death (1806) he was recalled to office, but died soon afterwards.

English writer and philanthropist, born in Stapleton, near Bristol. She wrote a pastoral drama, The Search After Happiness, at the age of eighteen. More became part of a London circle of eminent literary figures that included the actor, David Garrick. Her produced her two plays Percy (1777) and The Fatal Falsehood (1779). After Garrick’s death in 1779, More’s already strong religious and moral interests deepened. She wrote Thoughts on the Importance of Manners of the Great to General Society (1778) and Village Politics (1792). More also wrote moral tracts and established schools for the poor.

Refers to bluestocking author of The Inflexible Captive that Fanny is reading. Her son John gave it to her.

He and the 3rd Duke, who was a grandson through the line of eldest males, were cousins once removed. Lord March became the heir when the 3rd Dukes son was accidentally shot in 1754. He was 3rd Earl of March and then later the 4th Duke of Queensbury.
