She has unaffected, playful manners, speaks frankly, and shares with Lord Desford a lively sense of the ridiculous.

Nine years before she beg Lord Desford not to make up to her, contrary to their parent’s plan. Since then, she has refused several offers of marriage to the chagrin of her mother. A forlorn-looking slip of a girl. She is 19 years of age, but looks younger. She is neither bookish nor accomplished (her only skill is for stitchery), but has a very sweet and artless disposition. When not afraid, she talks away like a prattle-box, and has a knack for dealing with cantankerous old people.

Upon her mother's death (she was 8) she was placed at Miss Fletching's school in Bath by her father, who subsequently disappeared. After several years, Miss Fletching arrange for her to live with her aunt Bugle. Tired of the bad treatment she had met with at Lady Bugle’s, she ran away to seek refuge with her grandfather. Lord Desford found her on the road and accepted to take her to London, but as Lord Nettlecombe was out of town, he deposited her with his friend Miss Silverdale and departed in search of the disappeared baron.
