Hugo’s mother (deceased) was the daughter of a “weaver” from Yorkshire, and previous to the time of the book he was a major in the 95th Light Division. Hugo has become the heir due to the untimely deaths of his uncle and cousin, and has been summoned to Darracott Place by his grandfather to take his proper place in the family, and to be polished for his new role. All traces of his mother’s family are to be eliminated from his life and manners, as Lord Darracott assumes that he is the product of an early life as a “weaver’s brat”. Hugo is encouraged to offer for his cousin Anthea, and to put himself in the hands of his cousins Vincent and Claud to learn how to go on in proper society. He quickly becomes embroiled in events connected with the free trade, his cousin Richmond’s activities, and trying to become friends with his cousin Anthea, who he admires. He uses a fiancée, Amelia Melkinthorpe, to put Anthea at ease about his intentions towards her. He is viewed by his aunt, Lady Aurelia, as being not quite what he is presenting himself to be, and this view is borne out during the latter chapters of the book.

Daughters: Mary (Lady Chudleigh), Sarah (Mrs. Wenlock), Caroline (Lady Haddon), Anne (Lady Caldbeck)

Seat: Darracott Place, Kent

The head of the Darracott family, a baronet, who is not often wise in his handling of the diverse personalities of his descendents, but requires their obedience based solely on his own opinions and wishes. He is not happy about Hugo becoming his heir, and makes assumptions about Hugo’s intelligence, upbringing, and manners without making any effort to ascertain the validity of his assumptions. He is convinced that Hugo should be “trained” to appropriate behavior and actions, and feels that an arranged marriage to Hugo’s cousin Anthea will serve this training well. His favorite in the family is his grandson Richmond, who he indulges but will not permit to become an officer in the army due to his concern for Richmond’s life and health.

He has a puppyish devotion to his cousin Vincent, and is easily led by Vincent. His strong ambition is to be able to purchase his commission in the army, and is thwarted in this by his grandfather, mother, and sister. Because of his frustration, he can be led into dangerous activities which reach a crisis in the latter portion of the story.

Their headquarters was the Oak and Ivy Inn in the village of Hawkhurst, but were often to be found at the Mermaid public house in Rye, thirteen miles distant. "Much of the contraband entering the country across the sand and shingle coasts of Romney Marsh was shipped on packhorses to London, soon passing through the sleepy hamlet of Hawkhurst 10 miles or so inland. In the 1730's this collection of scattered farms and houses was the headquarters of the most notorious gang in the history of English smuggling." p. 47 from "The Ordnance Survey Guide to Smugglers' Britain" by Richard Platt. Their eventual downfall came from the particularly vicious murders of Richard Hawkins and William Chater in 1748. * MOORE, General Sir John (1761-1809)

THE UNKNOWN AJAX

Considered by many to be the father of the Light Infantry, General Sir John Moore was a military commander who led a campaign to Sweden during the Napoloeonic Wars. The son of a physician, Moore became an M.P. in 1784 and obtained a command in the British army when war broke out between France and Britain in 1793. General Moore was Commander-in-Chief of Government forces at Lacken Hill, Goff’s Bridge and Wexford town. He defeated 5,000 insurgents lead by Fr. Philip Roche at Goff’s Bridge and Foulkesmills on 20th June 1798. This victory was later attributed to the fact that the military had artillery and because of General Moore’s commanding ability. General Moore was considered very humane by the Wexford insurgents. As a soldier he carried out his duties but without malice. However, he failed to control his Yeomanry and Hessian units and they committed many atrocities. He was sent to Sweden in 1808 to assist King Gustavus IV in resisting Russian invasion, but had to be removed quickly due to disagreements with Gustavus over the details of the defense. Moore was killed at La Corruna, Spain fighting against Napoleon’s army in the Peninsular War in 1809. A poem entitled "The Burial of Sir John Moore" was written by Charles Wolfe to commemorate the event.
