Cousin, from whom he is to inherit: Charles, the Earl of Shane

“An insipid-looking gentleman in a sad-coloured redingote.” As Shane’s heir, he has accompanied his mother to prevent Shane’s eloping with Mary Fairfax, but mostly he sucks the knob of his cane.

FAIRFAX, Mary

“Pursuit”

Governess to Lucilla Gellibrand for 3 years, she is a calm and self-confident woman very soon to turn 30, with smooth brown ringlets, “fine grey eyes” with “a good deal of humour,” and a mouth “too generous for beauty.” She dresses soberly and serviceably as befits her station, and while Shane describes her as “restful,” she counters with “unobtrusive.” Shane holds her responsible for his ward’s elopement and has therefore required her to accompany him as he pursues the runaways.

GELLIBRAND, Lucilla

“Pursuit”

Guardian: Charles, the Earl of Shane

Governess: Mary Fairfax

“A soldier’s daughter, and not the least likely to turn into a fashionable young lady,” she is 17, has “bright, tumbled curls,” and is quite game, witness not only her elopement from Shane’s Sussex house with Edmund Monksley, but also her enthusiastic description of riding the stagecoach when their chaise becomes damaged.

MONKSLEY, Edmund

“Pursuit”

“A fresh-faced young man, with very blue eyes and a decided chin,” he is lieutenant of a line regiment which has been ordered to the Peninsula. The Earl of Shane describes him as “a penniless nobody” and thus has steadfastly prevented his marriage to Shane’s ward, Lucilla Gellibrand, hence the young people’s elopement to Gretna Green.

At about 33, he is very wealthy, maintaining at least a house in London and one in Sussex, and he is “one of the most noted whips of his day: a member of the Four Horse Club, of the Bensington, the winner of above a dozen races.” He is very recognizable, with “his handsome profile, with its bar of black brow, and masterful, aquiline nose.” His stated intention has been to marry his young ward, Lucilla Gellibrand, himself, and so when she elopes with Edmund Monksley to Gretna Green, Shane pursues them in his curricle, requiring Mary Fairfax, Lucilla’s governess, whom he holds responsible for the turn of events, to accompany him.

Just 18, he is destined for Oxford and the Grand Tour until his lifelong friend and neighbor Bab Paradise persuades him to help her avoid marriage to “an odious old man” by eloping with her to Gretna Green. He is potentially a very good swordsman and is willing to be romantic within reason.

PARADISE, “Bab”

“Runaway Match”

Her response to her father’s marriage plans for her is to persuade her lifelong friend and neighbor, Rupert Morley, to elope with her to Gretna Green.

PARADISE, Sir John

Harleston, Marquis of.

A Husband for Fanny” (Pistols for Two)

The "husband" who Clarissa Wingham plans for her daughter Fanny. Harleston is at least 40, a tall, well-proportioned gentleman who is "one of the biggest, but most unobtainable prizes of the Matrimonial Mart". Although it seems that he is interested in Fanny as his bride, he is rather more interested in her mother, Clarissa. Although he spends time and conversation with Clarissa, he spends just as much time with her daughter, making it seem as if he is interested in Fanny. However, he is a man who Fanny can confide in as if he were her father. All his conduct shows him to be a very kind, pleasant, patient and understanding man.

Horsham, Lord. "Uncle Horsham"

A Husband for Fanny” (Pistols for Two)

Uncle to Tom Wingham. Tom would have been his heir, had he not remarried and had a son. After Horsham's death, Tom Wingham was thwarted in his hopes to inherit.

Suitor of Fanny Wingham. A Lieutenant in the -th Foot, he is considered ineligible for Fanny by her mother Clarissa Wingham, despite his Expectations. However, Fanny has remained in love with him, despite his relative penury. He is candidly aware that he cannot support a wife on his pay, and cannot afford to buy his way into a better military position. A Husband for Fanny” (Pistols for Two)

Daughter of Clarissa Wingham. A pretty young girl of seventeen, quite trusting, unspoilt and natural. She amiably does everything her mother tells her to, and listens to her advice, without making unruly scenes or demands. Although Clarissa believes that she has long since given up her paramour, Richard Kenton, Fanny is still in love with him. Her ease of manner and her conversation with Harleston make it seem as if they are falling in love, but Fanny confides in him as if he were her father.

Wingham, Mrs. Clarissa

A Husband for Fanny” (Pistols for Two)

Mother to Fanny Wingham, widow to Tom Wingham. A gentle lady of 35 years who wears the purple-bloom gowns, turbans and lace caps suitable to a dowager, despite being advised not to by her daughter and her cousin, Lady Honoria Pednor. She wants what is best for her daughter, with the effect that she has scrimped and saved all her daughter's life to collect enough money to pay for a splendid coming-out when Fanny comes of age. She is so preoccupied with doing what is right for Fanny that she quite neglects to consider that her own self might be of greater interest to the Marquis of Harleston than that of her daughter's.

Wingham, Tom

A Husband for Fanny” (Pistols for Two)

Husband of Clarissa Wingham. He is deceased at the start of the story, but it transpires that he was an extravagant spendthrift who might have been more amiable had he inherited from his Uncle, Lord Horsham. "It was the poverty that made him so cross and so disobliging!" as his wife affirms.

Gretton, Priscilla

Anne Massingham's close friend from school, who repeats to her her brother's (unsuitable for an innocent girl's ears) remarks on Sir Charles Wainfleet

Lucille, Madame

Bath Miss” (Pistols for Two)

A Bath modiste in Milsom Street from whom Anne Massingham purchases a dashing crimson velvet pelisse, a tippet and muff, a mongrel puppy - and That Hat.

Massingham, Anne "Nan"

Bath Miss” (Pistols for Two)

The titular role. A vivacious young girl who Sir Charles Wainfleet is bringing home from school. Although at first she seems modest and demure, she startles Sir Charles by dashing straight off to Madame Lucille's and purchasing unsuitably dashing raiment and an incredibly fashionable bonnet. Her kindnesses towards animals lead to her purchasing a puppy and setting free the contents of a bird-fancier's shop, out of which embarassing predicament Sir Charles has to extricate her. Very much an innocent, but very determined as well, when she sets her heart on something precious few people can prevent her going ahead and doing it. She uses slang terms picked up from her schoolfriend Priscilla Gretton's brother to unwittingly scandalise Sir Charles, and seems quite unconscious of the consequences that her actions could lead to. Despite all this, she is charismatic, good natured and means well.

Massingham, General Sir James.

Grandfather to Anne Massingham, father to Miss Louisa Massingham and an unnamed son (Anne's father) who was killed at the Peninsula.

Spalding, Lady Almeria

Bath Miss” (Pistols for Two)

Daughter to the Earl of Alford. She and Sir Charles Wainfleet are betrothed, but Sir Charles does not look forward to the union with any pleasure. Handsome but rather frosty and supercilious, and with "an uncertain temper that had chased away many a promising suitor", she breaks off the engagement upon discovering Sir Charles staying at the Bear in the company of Anne Massingham (and her rather too elaborate bonnet.)

Stourbridge, Lord

Bath Miss” (Pistols for Two)

Son to the Earl of Alford, brother to Lady Almeria Spalding. A slow-witted young man who is loath to stand up to Sir Charles Wainfleet.

Titterstone, Maria

Younger sister to Miss Titterstone.

Titterstone, Miss,

Bath Miss” (Pistols for Two)

Elder sister to Maria Titterstone, between them they run a girl's school in Queen's Square, Bath. They are justifiably worried about allowing Sir Charles Wainfleet to escort Anne Massingham home from their establishment - not least because they know what kind of girl she is.

Wainfleet, Lady

Bath Miss” (Pistols for Two)

Mother to Sir Charles Wainfleet. She made him feel obliged to marry, thus his reluctant engagement to the Lady Almeria Spalding, but feels guilty when she discovers how Sir Charles really feels.

Wainfleet, Sir Charles, Baronet.

Bath Miss” (Pistols for Two)

Son to Lady Wainfleet. One of Heyer's typical bored Corinthians with an exemplary tailor and a taste for all sporting pursuits. Unwillingly betrothed to the Lady Almeria Spalding, he has been made to feel obliged that he should marry by his mother, but is not looking forward to the marriage. He is pressurised into promising to bring back Anne Massingham from school, and does so if only to oblige an old family friend, General Massingham; Anne's grandfather. He is impatient initially with Anne's excesses, but cannot resist her entreating looks, and is even amused by her, eventually growing to be fond of her as the story develops.

Sir Ralph Morland stakes his half-sister and ward, Helen Morland, at the card-table in a drunken and disorderly game, and Carlington is the sole person who accepts the challenge. With the devil's own luck, he wins Helen Morland, and, in a drunken state, orders his carriage to sweep them off to Gretna - forgetting that in fact, he is

Hazard” (Pistols for Two)

Ward and half-sister to Sir Ralph Morland, and heroine of the story. A gentle, golden-haired young lady, who is sensible and composed rather than obviously emotional, and is a strong contrast to her drunken, blustering half-brother. At all times she behaves with the grace and composure due to a true lady of quality, even when her brother loses her to the Marquis of Carlington in the degrading and drunken card game of the title. Her emotions are well under control, we only find out later that her graceful exit with Carlington was fuelled out of sheer anger towards her brother.

Cranbrook, John

Night at the Inn” (Pistols for Two)

Formerly employed for three years at a counting-house in Lisbon, John Cranbrook has returned suddenly to take a new post as clerk in Nathan Spennymore's Counting-house. Since he is a man of some substance, and since neither family nor friends have any idea that he is back in England, John Cranbook is ripe prey for the villainous Mr and Mrs Fyton when he is forced to stay at their inn, the Pelician. (all the other inns being full.)

Fyton, Mr and Mrs

The landlord of the Pelician and his wife. She comes from Norfolk. Although they appear on first impressions to be jolly people, smiling and rubicund, as the night progresses, it becomes clear that they are a cunning pair, running a murderous racket. (their unwitting guests are smothered in their beds, and then chopped up and boiled down in the washhouse.) When John Cranbrook comes to stay, talking of his good fortune, showing that he has plenty of money on him, and saying that nobody suspects he is back in England, he instantly becomes their next target.

Gateshead, Mary

The eldest daughter of a curate with a large family, she is going to become a governess to Mrs Stockton. Because she cannot afford the other inns, she is staying at the Pelican. Full of common sense and wisdom, she is perfectly safe from the Fytons because she is known to be staying there. Despite everything that happens however, she emerges the following morning none the wiser of what nightmarish events have been taking place whilst she slept.

Waggleswick, Mr

Night at the Inn” (Pistols for Two)

A Bow Street Runner, masquerading as a travelling agent. He has stayed at the Pelican several times before, but had no luck in catching the villainous landlord and landlay there red handed until the night in this story.

Celestine, Madame

"The most expensive modiste in all London", she makes Letty Wrexham's pink domino.

Claine, Sir Godfrey

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

Crewe, Mrs

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

Edwin Ledbury's married sister. She invites Letty Wrexham to dine with them prior to their visiting the Pantheon Masquerade.

Ledbury, Mr. Edwin

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

Suitor to Letty Wrexham. Letty refuses to allow Edwin to meet her brother (and guardian) Giles Wrexham because Giles disapproves of him as being in the 40th (a foot regiment, instead of a more select cavalry regiment.). However, Edwin is an eldest son, and his father has an estate in Somerset, so it turns out he is not so ineligible as Giles originally feared he was.

Rothbury

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

A friend to Giles Wrexham. Could possibly be a name used by mistake by Letty Wrexham to refer to the Earl of Rothwell as someone she suspects her brother Giles Wrexham of intending to marry her off to. However, this is debatable since he is only referred to once, as is Rothwell (who has a daughter of marriageable age, so maybe Letty is being melodramatic by accusing her brother of wishing to wed her off to a much older widower.)

Rothwell, Earl of.

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

The father of an un-named young lady who the Lady Albinia Wrexham suggests as a potential bride for her son, Giles Wrexham.

*Stultz

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

Mr.Giles Wrexham's tailor.

Welborne, Mr and Mrs.

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

Ruth Welborne's uncle and aunt, who live at Harley Street. They take in Ruth after her father dies, leaving her an orphan. We do not meet Mr Wrexham, but Mrs Wrexham is the snobbish mother of three daughters, who is desperate to get rid of her niece before she has to bring them out. For this reason she precipately accepts Sir Godfrey Claine's suit of her niece, regardless of whether he is a "nice" person.

Welborne, Ruth

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

The orphaned niece to Mr and Mrs Welborne, and object of Sir Godfrey Claine's suit. A pleasant yet shy young lady with smiling grey eyes, she is knocked down by a curricle and pair. Mr Giles Wrexham attends to her needs, and falls in love with her, but fails to find out who she is. When she wears a pink domino to the Pantheon Masquerade, Mr Giles Wrexham mistakes her for his disobedient sister, but then discovers she is not his sister but the girl whom he has fallen in love with.

Winforton

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

A former suitor of Letty Wrexham's. Lady Albinia Wrexham thought him unexpectionable, but it appears he was a gazetted fortune-hunter, and Letty's brother Giles Wrexham sent him packing along with seven others.

Worksop, Mrs.

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

Cousin to Sir Godfrey Claine, she is supposed to act as Ruth Welborne's chaperone at the Pantheon Masquerade. (but effectively leaves Ruth alone and vulnerable to Sir Godfrey Claine's attentions.)

Wrexham, Lady Albinia

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

Mother of Mr Giles Wrexham and Letty Wrexham. A faded and ethereal lady who dislikes scenes, and frequently fortifies herself by sniffing her vinaigrette. From her title, she is probably the daughter of a Duke, Marquis or Earl, which shows how eligible the Wrexhams are even without a title.

Wrexham, Miss Letty

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

Daughter to Lady Albinia Wrexham, sister to Mr Giles Wrexham. The spoiled, tempestuous and headstrong ward of her brother, she is insistent that he countenance the match between her and Mr Edwin Ledbury. Giles is reluctant to do so, because he has already dealt with eight of her former suitors, all of whom were gazetted fortune-hunters. After being forbidden to go to the Pantheon Masquerade, she goes off without telling anyone where she is going to bring Edwin Ledbury to meet her brother. Giles assumes she has gone to the masquerade against his wishes, where he chases her, and mistakes Ruth Welborne for her, due to their both possessing pink dominoes.

Wrexham, Mr.Giles

Pink Domino” (Pistols for Two)

Son of Lady Albinia Wrexham, brother to Letty Wrexham. A raven-haired and grey-eyed gentleman with an authorative air, despite his carelessness as regards fashionable dress. A strict guardian to his sister, he will not tolerate her melodramatic behaviour. However, there is a sensitive side to his initially severe and unbending character. This is hinted at, until he rediscovers Ruth Wrexham, whose needs he saw to after she was knocked down by a curricle and pair. United with the girl whom he has fallen in love with, he becomes mellowed and charitable.

The Duel” (Pistols for Two)

An awesome figure, with the reputation of being a lethal shot and quite merciless. However, despite that, he has a kind nature. However, he does not take insults kindly, and when the youthful Lord Saltwood accuses him of using loaded dice at the Corinthian Club, Rotherfield challenges him to a duel. Before the duel, he comes home one night to discover Lord Saltwood's sister Dorothea Saltwood in his house, begging him to direct her to Rotherfield's house. He deliberately keeps his identity secret from her, but does not prove immune to her pleading with him to persuade Rotherfield not to kill her brother.

Saltwood, Lady

The Duel” (Pistols for Two)

Saltwood, Lord Charles."Charlie"

The Duel” (Pistols for Two)

Allerton, 4th Viscount

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

Father of Alan, the 5th Viscount, deceased. A man of extravagant habits, who died leaving his family encumbered with debt.

Allerton, 5th Viscount, Alan Allerton.

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

Eldest son of the 4th Viscount Allerton and Lady Allerton, brother to the Honourable Timothy and Trix Allerton. Cousin to Miss Henrietta Clithertoe.

Formerly a military man, he is slightly wounded in action at Toulouse, which prevents him being informed until his return home that his father has left him penniless and in debt, and that his mother has only run up many more debts. She has been granted credit only because everyone expects Alan to marry his rich cousin, the heiress Miss Henrietta Clithertoe. He is far too honourable to marry Henrietta because it will seem as if he did so only for the sake of her money, never mind that he and she are in love. Following his statement that he will not ask her to marry him, Henrietta begins accepting the suit of gazetted fortune-hunters, among them Sir Matthew Kirkham, who Alan has taken a rare but violent dislike to. When Alan believes her to have eloped with Kirkham, he realises that he loves Henrietta despite everything, and sets out to rescue her.

Allerton, Lady

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

Widow to the 4th Viscount Allerton, mother to Alan, 5th Viscount Allerton, the Honourable Timothy, and Trix Allerton.

A charming lady, despite having a rather misguided sense of responsibility. Although she knew that her husband left her son encumbered with debt, and that the family are in straitened circumstances, she did not tell her son this because he was "wounded". The 5th Viscount returns to discover that his mother has merely run up many more debts, concerned with bringing out her daughter Trix into Society (at great expense) and throwing a ball in the honour of her friend, the Grand-duchess Catherine of Oldenburg. She has only succeeded in getting so much on credit because everyone expects that her son will marry his cousin, the heiress Miss Henrietta Clithertoe.

Allerton, the Honourable Timothy.

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

Son to the 4th Viscount and Lady Allerton, brother to Alan, 5th Viscount Allerton and Trix Allerton.

A young dandy, "generally supposed to care for nothing but the fashion of his neckcloth". He assumes upon hearing that Alan has no idea of proposing to the heiress Henrietta Clithertoe that Alan expects him to make an offer to her, and is not gratified. However, he obliges when Henrietta solicts his assistance in pursuing his sister Trix Allerton, who is supposed to have eloped, rather than drag Alan away from the ball in honour of the Grand-duchess Catherine of Oldenburg.

Allerton, Trix

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

Sister to Alan, 5th Viscount Allerton.

A high-spirited seventeen-year old, she is "thought by the censorious to have been born for the express purpose of driving her mother into her grave by the outrageous nature of her pranks..." When she discovers that her brother has no intention of marrying Henrietta Clitheroe, despite the fact that he adores her, and is assured by Henrietta that she loves Alan, she devises a cunning plan to throw them together, which is the hub of the storyline.

Boynton, Jack

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

A former suitor to Trix Allerton. Trix leads Henrietta Clithertoe to believe that she has eloped with him, although the affair is believed to have ended months earlier.

see Oldenburg, the Grand-duchess Catherine of.

Cinderella

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

The famous fairy-tale heroine. After some five hours spent pursuing his sister Trix, who is believed to have eloped, an exasperated Timothy Allerton snaps that you might as well expect people to have seen Cinderella in a pumpkin as expect them to have seen his sister in a chaise.

Clitheroe, Miss Henrietta. "Hetty". "Henry".

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

Cousin to Alan, 5th Viscount Allerton, ward to Sir John Osset.

A gentle, sensible and charming young lady, with dark hair and blue eyes, she is the orphaned daughter of Lady Allerton's brother and heiress to a great fortune. Despite the fact that she has been brought out for two years, and has had a great many suitors, she has refused them all, remaining loyal to Alan. Her deceased father hoped that she and Alan should be married one day. Henrietta is heartbroken when Alan, rather than appear to marry her for her fortune, tells her that he will not offer for her hand. She hides her grief beneath a glib facade of bravado, and starts flirting with other gentlemen, including the oily Sir Matthew Kirkham, a fortune-hunter. Alan's sister Trix Allerton is not taken in, being aware that Henrietta and Alan are still in love. When Henrietta "discovers" that Trix has eloped, she instantly sets out in pursuit rather than drag Alan away from the ball in honour of the Grand-duchess Catherine of Oldenburg and make him appear impolite.

Dawson

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

Miss Henrietta Clithertoe's personal maid.

Helmsley

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

The Allertons' butler. (this is an assumption, due to the use of his surname rather than a first name, which would denote a footman.)

Kirkham, Sir Matthew

P42-To have the honour

Suitor to Henrietta Clithertoe.

"...it was absurd to suppose that a girl with as much good sense as Hetty would for an instant entertain the pretensions of a penniless roué, past his first youth, and with at

least two unsavoury scandals attached to his name."

"...however obnoxious Kirkham might appear in the eyes of his fellow-men, he possessed considerable charm for the ladies..."

After Henrietta is told by Alan, 5th Viscount Allerton that he will not ask for her hand in marriage, she hides her grief by flirting with countless fortune-hunters, including Kirkham. He is best summed up in two quotes from the text. Alan detests Kirkham, and when he is led to believe that Henrietta has eloped with him, he sets out in pursuit.

Oldenburg, the Grand-duchess Catherine of.

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

Sister to the Tsar of Russia and friend of Lady Allerton.

Lady Allerton's ball is thrown in the honour of this real-life character, neither amiable nor a beauty. The Grand-duchess is infamous for having rudely walked out of the Prince Regent's party at Carlton House. (though she only behaves so when she wishes to be disagreeable.)

Osset, Sir John

To Have the Honor” (Pistols for Two)

Guardian to Miss Henrietta Clitheroe. Respecting the wishes of her father, he raises no objection to the notion that Henrietta and Alan, 5th Viscount Allerton marry, even though Alan is impoverished.
