CARTER, Mrs. Ermyntrude
NO WIND OF BLAME |
Nickname: Aunt Ermy (by Mary), Trudinka (by the Prince)
Spouse: Wally Carter
Daughter: Victoria Fanshawe
Kind, generous, easy-going, but distinctly vulgar, Ermyntrude was on the stage before she married Geoffrey Fanshawe. She inherited great wealth from the late Geoffrey along with Palings, a beautiful house and grounds. She dotes on her daughter, Vicky, and is extremely proud of her daughter‚s beauty. She indulges Vicky in everything and, having a dramatic nature herself, revels in Vicky‚s unusual tendency to assume role-playing on a regular basis. She has long since realized her mistake in marrying the inappropriate Wally, but makes the best of it. She is having a purported Georgian Prince, whom she met on vacation, to stay for the weekend and Wally is not pleased. Ermyntrude, however, revels in the very complimentary attention that the Prince pays her.
CARTER, Wallis
NO WIND OF BLAME |
Nickname: Wally
Spouse: Ermyntrude Carter
Stepdaughter: Victoria Fanshawe
Niece: Mary Cliffe
Wally is a dissolute ne‚er-do-well who is regularly in financial difficulty. He was Mary Cliffe‚s guardian until she reached her majority. He was lucky enough to attach the affections of the wealthy Ermyntrude while on holiday. He causes Ermyntrude and Mary a great deal of embarrassment and is generally regarded by the neighborhood as a complete waster. He often alludes to the money he will come into at the death of his ŒAunt‚ Clara, who is really a cousin and has been living in a home for Mentally Deficients for the last ten years. Everyone takes this story as his excuse for always borrowing money which he vows to pay back after Clara‚s death.. More than all of his other faults, Ermyntrude resents his spending time with Harold White, whom she dislikes and distrusts.
CHESTER, Dr. Maurice
NO WIND OF BLAME |
The local GP and long-time friend of Ermyntrude Carter, Maurice is an excellent doctor with a confiding bedside manner. He is a reliable friend on whom the Carter family can always rely. When the situation at Palings becomes very trying on the residents, he altruistically invites the Prince to take tea with him on Sunday.
CLIFFE, Miss Mary
NO WIND OF BLAME |
Uncle: Wallis Carter
A steady, reliable, attractive young woman, Mary has for many years borne the embarrassment of her connection to her uncle and former guardian, the extremely unsteady and unreliable Wally. As Ermyntrude‚s secretary she is housekeeper, confidante, and general factotum. Her innate sense of decorum requires that she try to keep the eccentric residents of Palings in some sort of order, but she is usually unsuccessful. Recently she has been seeing Hugh Dering socially, but is unsure of the relationship‚s future. She is concerned by what appears to her to be his quite often inappropriate tendency to be frivolous and unconcerned when matters seem quite serious to her.

Mother: Ermyntrude Carter
A beautiful young lady who has been completely indulged by her mother, Vicky is just home from finishing school and is preparing for her debut. She amuses herself by assuming various roles and dressing herself to fit the parts. She and Mary have become fairly good friends, even though Mary is several years older and their personalities are complete opposites. Although her imagination leads her to do a lot of playacting, she is actually quite practical and perceptive. She loves her mother dearly, but understands her completely and doesn‚t try to pretend that she is less vulgar or more intelligent and realistic than she is. She has heard about Mary‚s and Hugh‚s relationship and is anxious to see if he is improved from her childhood memories, but she finds him stuffy.

A bright, witty, quick, astute investigator with a terrific sense of humor, Hemingway is a stage aficionado who approaches his cases with an open mind and an application of psychology, his other pet interest. The prince is the weekend houseguest of Ermyntrude Carter. An impoverished Georgian émigré who ingratiated himself with Ermyntrude Carter while she was on holiday in Antibes, he is very attractive with exquisite manners and charming address. His motives, however, are very definitely mercenary and he would be glad to see Ermyntrude free of Wally.
