UNDERSTANDING THE LIST
As a new member, you may prefer to "lurk" for a time - to follow the discussions without joining in. If you choose to do so, this will give you the opportunity to see how the list works & to become familiar with how the discussions operate.

If you are a list member then you can access the archives of past discussions at any time. The list has been active since 1997, and over the years we have discussed each of Heyer's books, some more than once. If you do not know how to access the site, or find a password for yourself, see The how to page which has all the information on how to manage your subscription and access list archives.

INTRODUCING YOURSELF
When you are ready to join the discussions, please introduce yourself to the group. Tell us your name, where you're from, anything that you particularly feel we need to know, and especially how you discovered Georgette Heyer. Which is your favorite book, your favorite hero and heroine, the character whose ears you'd most like to box? Which secondary character would you most like to have his or her own book?

POSTING GUIDELINES
Posting guidelines differ from list commands, which are discussed on the how to page. These are the rules on list etiquette - very important indeed!

1. SUBEJECT HEADINGS - All list postings must have an appropriate subject in your subject line, so that we can determine what your mail is about. Postings about a specific book under discussion must use the chosen acronym for that book. Off-topic posts must contain the subject OT. If you receive your mail in the digest form, please remember to CHANGE YOUR SUBJECT HEADER before you hit that REPLY button. The correct subject headers appear below. We do not wish to see "Digest # 789" as a subject line.

In the next section you will see Examples of Subject Headings and Acronyms. Please take a look at the examples. As you spend more time on the list you will get used to them and they won't seem so complicated. and also see number 6 in this section about ADMIN posts.

2. EXCESSIVE QUOTING IS NOT ALLOWED. You must turn off the automatic quoting mechanism of your email program. At the very least, edit previous messages so that they are pertinent, and keep quoted portions to one-third or less than what you are adding. Nested quoting is also not permitted, unless your post will not be understood without it.

3. SIGNATURE LINES must not be over three lines in length.

4. "ME TOO" posts are strongly discouraged (i.e., quoting an entire post, and then adding one line of agreement at the end.)

5. NO PERSONAL MAIL is to be sent directly to the person rather than through the list. Administrative questions should be sent directly to Anne, Lady Jersey Woodley and Lisa, Mrs Gideon May-Ware .

6. DON'T SEND ADMIN POSTS. Only Patronesses may use this in the subject line. If you feel the need to use this as a subject line then the message should go to a patroness - please do not send a reply to any message from the List with this subject line either. This might sound draconian, but it is this way we make sure that Administration messages are read by everyone - it means anything with an Admin header is important for all!

7. DO NOT POST COPYRIGHTED material to the list.

8. READ ALL MAIL in your inbox or digest before replying to a question. Someone else may have already answered a request. You may also wish to read all your mail and then post a larger note addressing multiple topics. Each member is allocated four posts per day, and one larger post conserves your posts & relieves list congestion.

9. COURTESY AND BEING ON TOPIC: The purpose of this list is to promote a friendly atmosphere whereby members can freely express their opinions about Heyer's works and share information about the Regency period. Courteous and kind behavior is expected at all times. Please keep in mind that there is a person behind the computer screen.

10.Please keep in mind that this is a GEORGETTE HEYER list. Off topic subjects are allowed, but should be kept to a minimum, as we do not wish to lose the focus of the list. The List Patronesses reserve the right to end any discussion. In addition, many topics have been discussed before, so please make use of the archives. Familiar topics found in the archives include cousins marrying, legality of sister-in-law marriages, the pronunciation of Heyer, etc. In addition, the Heyer Mailing List Companion has links to places of interest and common discussions on the list and is located at http://www.heyerlist.org.

Examples of On Topic Subjects:
1. The current book the list is reading.
2. Any Heyer book or story
3. Regency lifestyle, historical figures, writers (i.e., Jane Austen) or issues
4. Occasionally contemporary regency authors and books (no long threads!)
5. Casting a theoretical Heyer movie
6. Characteristics of the characters, including physical
7. Georgette Heyer herself; life, attitudes, etc.
8. Period costumes
9. Heyer books for sale

Examples of Off Topic Subjects, which must be labeled "OT":
1. Social and class attitudes today.
2. Movies or adaptations that are not regency, Austen, etc.
3. Requests for help running list commands. Send these to Anne (awoodley@ihug.co.nz) or Lisa (maylisa66@earthlink.net).

This does not mean that Off-Topic subjects cannot be posted, but please think twice about continuing an off-topic thread. Then think a third or fourth time. Consider that you can always continue the discussion in private e-mails. Consider whether the majority of the other 400 members wish to read long, off-topic threads.
