dithyramb unusual word 18 Webster's: "Any extravagantly emotional speech or writing". Lady Elizabeth thinks of Alverstoke's description of Charis as a dithyramb. AW: "it does depend on the context but the root of the word is in the worship of Dionysus in Ancient Greece where worshippers would embark on chanting, singing dancing and become quite trancelike. This was a Dithyramb."
grapnels unusual word 19 Webster's: "A small anchor with usually four or five curved, pointed arms". These were what broke loose in the wind when Felix was carried away by the balloon.
ratiocination unusual word 25 A process of logical thinking or deduction. Charis thinks of Endymion's plan to sneak off and get married, thus avoiding the wrath of his mother, Alverstoke and Frederica until it was too late, as a ratiocination. I love the characterization of these two in this scene.
