Does anyone have more information on exact locations? |
| Montague House | London location | 4 | There were 4 possible Montague Houses during this period. 1) Located in Greenwich Park near Blackheath. This Montague House was rented by the Prince Regent in 1798 to be used by his wife, Princess Caroline. Essentially, he wanted her out from under his own roof, their marriage being extremely unhappy. 2) Home to the Duke of Buccleuch, located in Whitehall. 3) "This Montague House was built for Elizabeth Montague. It was on the north west angle of Portman Sq. Much later it was the house of Lord Rokeby - but I think that was well after the Regency." 4) The present-day site of the British Museum was originally called Montague House. It is separated from Torrington Square, where Anne has determined the railway ran, by just one block. So we believe this is the Montague House to which the text refers. Felix thought the Catch-me-Who-Can was located "not far from Montague House", and Alverstoke said it was near Fitzroy Square, both of which basically fit the present-day British Museum. | Was the Montague House in Greenwich Park demolished or had its name changed? All my current guidebooks that have sections on Greenwich Park don't mention it. |

By 1770 there were four circulating libraries in London. The first free library in London was not established until 1853. It was in Marylebone. | |
