In 1783, French farmers destroyed the first successful hydrogen-filled balloon.  It landed in their fields about 15 miles from Paris.  The farmers believed that it was an evil spirit, or that the moon had broken loose. This balloon was launched by J.A.C. Charles in collaboration with the Roberts brothers.
